Das ist hart. Nach den teils brutalen Aufständen in Groß-Britannien, die hoffentlich ein Ende gefunden haben, wird nun die Rechnung für die Sachschäden erstellt. Und diese ist zweifelsohne sehr hoch. Familienbetriebe wurden niedergebrannt. Ganze Wohnblocks ebenso. Autos zertrümmert, Läden geplündert. Nun kam ebenfalls heraus, dass ein größeres Lagerhaus des Entertainment-Riesen Sony in Enfield ebenfalls den Riots zum Opfer fiel. Nicht nur wurde das gesamte Gebäude niedergebrannt, sondern natürlich auch die darin gelagerten Waren. Das Lagerhaus wurde auch von kleineren Independent-Labels genutzt, die dort ihre Warenbestände lagerten. Und diese sind nun vollständig vernichtet.
Rund 30 Millionen DVDs und Blu-ray wurden vernichtet – hiermit beträgt der durchschnittliche wirtschaftliche Schaden bereits 150 Millionen Euro.
Die erwähnten kleinen Independent-Labels trifft dies besonders hart. Sie besitzen oftmals nicht das finanzielle Polster um einen solchen Verlust abzudecken. Davon betroffen sind Kult-Labels wie etwa ARROW VIDEO, SHAMELESS SCREEN ENTERTAINMENT, ARTIFICIAL EYE, DOGWOOF und BFI.

As most of you will be aware, the rioting in London spread to Enfield last night and the distribution centre was looted and set on fire. Thankfully no staff were harmed in this atrocious attack, but it does mean all Arrow stock, and the stock of many other distributors, is now no more. We are working with Sony DADC and our partners to find a solution for getting stock back in stores very soon. Stock that is currently with retailers is all that will be available for the moment and new releases such as Midnight and the forthcoming ArrowDrome titles will surely be affected.
Für Arrow ist dies ein doppelter Verlust. Aufgrund eines Pressfehlers musste eine aktuelle Auflage des Horrorfilms THE BEYOND ausgetauscht werden – die Umtauschaktion lief aber gerade erst an, somit befanden sich noch fast alle korrigierten Blu-rays im abgebrannten Lagerhaus. Auch die Veröffentlichung weiterer Titel sind nun von dem Brand betroffen (das Release wird sich wohl verzögern).
Auch Shameless Screen Entertainment hat sich über Cult-Labs.com geäußert:

However, as a result, Shameless have lost all stock stored there, meaning that stock currently with retailers is the only stock available.
Shameless are in emergency communication with their suppliers and distributors and are determining which titles need to be replicated as a priority, but it is with regret that they must advise that all pre-launch stock of Don’t Torture a Duckling has been destroyed. This has been re-ordered as a priority but there is a chance the release date may need to move back from 29 August as there will be disruptions throughout the industry.
Guardian.co.uk sprach mit David Wilkinson, von GUERILLA FILMS, die im Brand über 60.000 Medien-Einheiten verloren haben:
„Most of the people in the independent film world have been hit. Companies larger than mine will have cashflow problems. I have spoken to friends who say they may have to lay off people, because DVDs keep the business going.“
Das Desaster ist für die Independent-Labels somit perfekt – aber aus allem Schlechten kann manchmal etwas Gutes entstehen und so haben Musik- und Filmfans bereits eine Internet-Initiative gegründet, um die Indie-Labels zu unterstützen.
