The new cut goes someway to fixing this issue without detracting from the overall impact of the movie. Animal deaths play a big part in Cannibal flicks and the Mondo ‚documentaries‘ that helped to spawn the genre because images of animal death help to increase the veracity of the faked human killings that often followed. Wrong foot the audience with a hacked up turtle and watch their sense of horror increase later when the human cast start getting torn to shreads.

Deodato uses alternative shots and missing frames (a device that works considering the films constant narrated references to the process of film editing and movie creation) that lessen the gutpunch effect of the animal killings without removing the scenes or making them any less thought provoking. I still had to turn away but maybe that because these scenes are burnt onto the back of my eyelids because I’ve watched the film so often. Those scenes still leave me with ambigious feelings towards the work and despite the toned down effect, I think in my mind’s eye I was filling in the gaps and feeling a little green.Overall, the new edit does nothing to detract from what is now a cinema classic, rather than a gory fanboy flick. One minor quibble might be that during the Turtle hunt and the subsequent evisceration of the unfortunate creatures, the Jack Anders character is repeatedly shown looking as if, even though they now must hunt and kill to survive, he takes no pleasure in it. This combined with the footage of the cast snaring the creature and dragging it ashore, leave the viewer in no doubt that this is a practical exercise in survival and, with the lessening of the extreme images, it plays a little better and leaves you more sympathetic to the cast. The is slightly undone by the shot of Anders goofing off with the turtles severed head towards the end of the scene.
